Here, the bicycle is the ideal means of transport to leisurely tour around and see, taste and experience everything on the way. Moreover, the city itself is compact and bicycle-friendly, with direct connections to the countryside.

What makes this region extra special? The combination of culture, history and gastronomy. You will pass mills, cheese farms, courtyards, dikes and nature reserves: all within cycling distance. And with a few tasty stops along the way, you will turn your trip into a day to savour.

A tasty cycle route for every gourmet

For those who enjoy a day out with a touch of craft and a pinch of nostalgia, this cycle route of about 35 kilometres is highly recommended. The route follows well-trodden cycle paths and is suitable for young and old.

Starting point: Gouda Cheese Experience

Start your day in the heart of Gouda with a visit to the Gouda Cheese Experience. This interactive attraction takes you into the story of Gouda cheese: from the cow to the cheeseboard. You will learn all about the maturing process, the taste profiles and the worldwide fame of this Dutch pride. A visit that stimulates, amazes and gets your taste buds on edge!

Stop 1: Kaasboerderij Hoogerwaard - Ouderkerk aan den IJssel

After leaving Gouda, you will cycle along quiet paths towards Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, where you will arrive at Kaasboerderij Hoogerwaard after about 8 kilometres. Here, farmer's cheese is still made in the traditional way from raw milk. You can take a look in the stables, taste the cheeses and take a piece with you for the road.

Stop 2: Windmill De Windotter - Haastrecht

Continue your route along the Hollandse IJssel towards Haastrecht. There, you will soon see the sails of Molen De Windotter turning. This monumental tower mill is still in operation and grinds grain for local bakers. When the mill is open, you can look inside and discover how the centuries-old craft is still alive.

Stop 3: Picnic break in the polder landscape

Between Haastrecht and Stolwijk, you cycle through open moorland, with vistas and ditches full of water birds. Here is the perfect time for a break. Bring a change of clothes and find a spot in the grass for a self-assembled picnic with local produce. No idea where to get them? There are plenty of cheese shops and delis in Gouda city centre where you can fill your bag with goodies for the road beforehand.

Stop 4: Stolwijk - Cheese and regional products

In Stolwijk, you can make another stop at a local farm shop or cheese shop. Here you will find cheeses you don't see in the supermarket, such as spicy aged farm cheese or herb varieties. A fun and tasty souvenir to take home.

Back to Gouda via Goverwelle

The final kilometres take you back to the city via the countryside and the Goverwelle district. End your day with a terrace on the Markt or with a look around the old streets surrounding the Sint-Janskerk.
