This is how you organise a mini Cheese Experience at home!

Can't wait for your visit to Gouda? Good news! You can already experience the magic of the Gouda Cheese Experience in your own living room. With a little creativity and this compact step-by-step plan, you can transform any table into a tasting room full of aroma, flavour and fun.

A taste of the real thing

Before you start tasting and discovering, it's nice to know that a home-Experience is mainly about discovering, laughing and learning together. You don't need to be a professional cheese connoisseur, as curiosity and conviviality are all you need. The four steps below will help you on your way to creating a home Gouda Cheese Experience experience that tastes like more!

Step 1: Make your own tasting

Start with three types of Gouda cheese: young, mature and old. Cut them into small cubes and place them on a board with numbers or colours. Let everyone taste blind and guess which cheese is oldest.Talk together about what you taste. Is the young cheese creamier? Is the old one spicier and grittier? This way you will discover what maturation does to taste. Bonus tip: write down everyone's favourite cheese and give it a nickname. Who knows, maybe a new family cheese will emerge!

Step 2: Smell like a cheese connoisseur

Cheese doesn't just smell like cheese. Set out a few scented jars with ingredients commonly found in or with cheese: mustard, nuts, honey, spices or even a drop of beer. Have the participants smell the jars with their eyes closed and guess what it is.Explain that smell and taste work together. Without a nose you taste less intensely. You notice this immediately when you eat a piece of cheese with your nose closed. Laughter guaranteed, and educational too.

Step 3: Test your knowledge with a cheese quiz

Ask a few questions to find out who is the real cheese king or queen in the house. Of course, the best way to do that is with our Gouda cheese quiz, in which 10 questions will determine who wins the coveted title. Prepare in advance with a selection of the quiz questions:

  • What is farmhouse cheese?
  • Where does the name "Gouda cheese" originate?
  • What is "holding hands"?

The one with the most correct answers may thus crown himself a real cheese master (and serve cheese and drinks in the next round as a reward!).

Step 4: Taste, laugh and learn

Make it a cosy moment with music, drinks and maybe a Dutch drinks board to go with it. This will give you a foretaste of what awaits you in Gouda. On our website you can read all about the Gouda Cheese Experience and discover how tasting, learning and fun come together with us.
