Here's how to take Gouda home with you
For many international visitors, a visit to the city of Gouda is not complete without taking home a piece of cheese. A tangible reminder of the rich flavour, history and craftsmanship you experienced during your visit to the Gouda Cheese Experience. But which cheese is best to take home? How do you do that practically? And how do you make sure it retains its quality on the road and at home? In this blog, we give you a complete overview.
Which cheeses are best to take away?
Not all cheeses are equally travel-friendly. Younger, soft cheeses in particular are more fragile and spoil faster. Especially when you are on the road for longer periods of time or travelling through warmer climates. Fortunately, Gouda cheese is available in all kinds of maturation stages and precisely the more mature varieties are ideal for transport.
Old Gouda cheese (24 months or older)
This cheese has a full, powerful flavour with salt crystals and a firm, crumbly texture. Its low moisture content means it keeps naturally for longer and resists temperature fluctuations well. Even without refrigeration, it will keep for weeks (if vacuum-packed). Ideal for long trips and a favourite gift for true cheese lovers.
Mature Gouda cheese
Aged cheese offers the best of both worlds: it is softer than old cheese, but still firm enough to carry around. The flavour is rich but accessible, making it suitable for almost everyone. This cheese is perfect for everyday enjoyment by serving it on bread, in dishes or with a glass of wine
Smoked and spiced varieties
For those looking for something special, there are also Gouda cheeses with extra flavourings such as mustard seed, cumin, truffle or a subtle smoke flavour. These variants give a unique twist to Gouda's classic profile and make great original gifts. Thanks to their slightly firmer structure, these cheeses are also well suited for transport, especially in vacuum packaging.
This is how to take your cheese home safely
Taking a piece of cheese with you is easier than you might think, as long as you know how to package and store it. Here are some practical tips to help you bring your cheese home in the best possible condition, whether you are travelling by plane, car or train.
Choose vacuum packaging
At the Gouda Cheese Experience, you can take away your favourite cheeses vacuum-packed. This is the safest way to transport cheese: it seals the cheese airtight, prevents mould and significantly extends its shelf life. Vacuum-packed cheese does not need to be refrigerated during your trip, as long as you do not leave it in the full sun for days. Are you spending a weekend in Gouda, for example? Then you don't have to worry about your just-scored cheese, because it will still be just as tasty at home next week!
Check the customs rules of your destination
Are you travelling abroad and want to take a piece of Gouda with you? Most countries allow you to import hard, vacuum-packed cheeses without a problem, especially if personal quantities are involved. Still, the rules can vary from country to country. Travellers to the US, Canada, Australia or Asia, for example, would do well to check the current import regulations in advance. In doubt? Feel free to ask our team in the shop.
Store smart when you get home
As soon as you get home, ideally remove the cheese from its vacuum packaging. Wrap it in cheese paper or baking paper, and store it in a sealed box in the fridge. This will allow the cheese to breathe and retain its flavour and texture. Avoid cling film or aluminium, as they seal too much and cause mould or cause the cheese to sweat.
Freezing is possible, but preferably not
Yes, you can freeze hard cheese, but it does affect its texture. It often becomes crumbly and loses some of its creaminess. So you should only do this if you really can't finish everything in time. So storing it in the fridge and consuming it within a few weeks is by far the best choice.
